CBT for GPs: Referral Information

CBT Australia offers therapy for individuals, couples, families and groups.  Services can be provided for infants, children, adolescents and adults.

Our team of psychologists and specialist clinical psychologists, all of whom are registered with the Psychologists Registration Board of Victoria, and are eligible for Medicare rebates.

In addition to treating a range of emotional and behavioural problems, other services offered include intellectual and educational assessments, assessments to support an application for funding for children with special needs, medico-legal assessments for personal injury claims.

The Better Access Initiative Program (Medicare)

Substantial rebates are available from Medicare for up to 10 individual consultations in a calendar year.

The Better Access Initiative aims to:

  • encourage GPs to participate in early intervention, assessment and management of patients with mental disorders and to streamline access to appropriate psychological interventions in primary care
  • encourage private psychiatrists to see more patients
  • provide referral pathways for appropriate treatment of patients with mental disorders including treatment by eligible clinical psychologists and psychologists
  • provide eligible patients with up to 10 Medicare rebates for up to 10 individual and 10 group-based therapy sessions per calendar year
  • support GPs and primary care providers with education and training to better diagnose and treat mental disorders

Clients should discuss eligibility for this and other Commonwealth government schemes to assist with payment of fees with their GP. A referral from a GP is necessary for these services.

Standard Patient Fees

Health Care Card Holders

If patients have reached their maximum health payments for the year, the Medicare rebate could be higher.

A number of the private health insurance agencies give partial rebates for psychological consultations. It is advised to check your policy to see what cover your policy gives you regarding consultations with a psychologist.

Access To Allied Psychological Services (ATAPS) Program

We have been informed by the Divisions of General Practice that all doctors can refer health card holders and low income earners under the Access To Allied Psychological Services (ATAPS) program.

Doctors need to obtain a numbered voucher from the relevant GP Division.  Divisions that our practices at Narre Warren North and Mentone are generally covered by are Dandenong Casey (ph 8792 1900), Eastern Ranges (9739 6751), Monash (9570 3727) and Bayside (9553 2455).

Each voucher authorises six sessions.  If a second voucher is to be issued, the GP must provide the voucher before the seventh appointment.  There is no cost to the patient except for those referred through Dandenong Casey Division where a co-payment of $20 is expected.

In cases of extreme hardship, we are happy to waive the out of pocket expense if, in the doctor’s opinion, it is necessary.  Please call our office if you wish to consider this option.
