The most efficient way to develop new skills is through practice -- learning by doing. Therefore, this workshop highly interactive, incorporating structured learning activities including case examples, audio/video-recorded work samples, small group exercises, and “real”-plays. The goal is for you to be able to transfer and incorporate newly learned knowledge and skills into your real-world interactions.
The materials covered are applicable to a range of professionals such as psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, counselors, psychiatric nurses, graduate students, case managers, probation/parole officers, and other professionals working with clients in private practice, outpatient mental health centers, hospitals, day reporting centers, halfway and transitional housing programs, prisons, and probation/parole systems.
Integrating Motivational Interviewing with CBT
Motivational Interviewing (MI), with its client centered focus, can be a valuable addition for increasing client engagement and overall responsiveness to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). While CBT is viewed as a methodology for providing specific tools to help people make changes in distorted/exaggerated thinking patterns and self-defeating behaviours, the emphasis of MI is on eliciting the client’s own motivations regarding change goals. MI discussions typically focus on why and how one might change specific behaviour. The benefits of integrating MI and CBT lies in the potential to enhance engagement, treatment adherence, and reduce dropouts.
In this advanced training course, you will become familiar with several MI-CBT integration strategies:
(a) sequential -- MI as prelude to CBT
(b) stylistic - blending elements of both models to produce a harmonious interaction, and
(c) thinking focused discussions – MI conversations to increase motivation for changing dysfunctional cognitions.
-
(1) Recognise key distinctions between the MI and CBT models
(2) Learn how blending MI skills with CBT interventions can enhance engagement and collaborative goal setting around self-defeating and destructive behaviours
(3) Practice using MI as a pretreatment discussion to enhance client engagement in CBT activities
(4) Learn to stylistically integrate MI elements into CBT discussions to create a softer CBT delivery style
(5) Become skilled at having MI conversations focused on cognitions proposed by CBT models to underlie human disturbance
* All participants will receive prereading assignments to supplement the material presented in the course
