  • The psychologist will spend some time getting to know you and the issues to be addressed. Usually by the end of the first session you and the psychologist would have collaborated to decide what goals need to be set. The psychologist may request for you to complete an assessment. The results of the assessment are a measure of the severity of your issue, so when given later in therapy, enable you and the psychologist to see if progress is being made. In cognitive behaviour therapy the psychologist will explore with you the thoughts and beliefs leading to your distressed emotions, help you re-evaluate the unhelpful thoughts, and then assist you in developing new ways to think. Tasks to do between sessions are usually agreed upon to consolidate what you have learnt in therapy, particularly new thoughts and beliefs. Cognitive behaviour therapy is a structured and focused therapy. It is the aim of therapy to give the client knowledge and skills to manage their life better.

  • No, you do not need a doctors referral to see a psychologist or clinical psychologist at CBT Australia but you do need a doctors referral if you would like to claim a rebate from Medicare. A number of other funding sources also require a doctors referral, such as TAC, WorkCover, Veteran Affairs and Victims of Crime.

  • There are a number of funding sources for psychological treatment.  You may be eligible for a rebate under Medicare if your doctor, psychiatrist or paediatrician considers your issue relevant. Injured workers may be able to have psychological treatment for psychological aspects of an injury covered by WorkCover. Car accident victims and families grieving the loss of a loved one in a car accident are eligible for TAC funding for treatment of psychological injuries resulting from the accident. Victims of crime are eligible for funding for treatment of the psychological injury of the crime from Victims of Crime Assistance Tribunal. Veterans may be eligible for funding from the Department of Veteran Affairs. NDIS may include funding for supports within an individual’s plan. Extras cover with a number of private health insurance companies may give a rebate for psychological treatment. It is not possible, however, to claim this rebate in addition to Medicare.
