Alex Cameron
BPsych
Alex graduated with a Bachelor of Psychology at the University of Newcastle in 2012 and is a registered psychologist. He lives in Newcastle where he works primarily in private practice counselling individuals and couples and also facilitates group therapy programs at a private hospital.
Alex has trained extensively in various forms of the cognitive behaviour therapies. Most notably, he is an Associate Fellow of The Albert Ellis Institute in New York City and has been approved by the Institute as a suitably qualified Rational-Emotive and Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy (RE&CBT) therapist, supervisor, and trainer.
Alex is interested in working with people who want to feel healthier, happier, and live more productive, less stressful lives. He promotes adopting the underpinning philosophical viewpoint of CBT with his clients, supervises and trainees; that “People are not disturbed by events, but by the view of which they take of them” (Epictetus). And so Alex believes in encouraging people to take different perspectives on their personal adversities, giving them support to develop healthier ways of coping to overcome their obstacles, and to start taking control of the problems in their lives - rather than the other way around.
Alex has particular expertise in the cognitive behavioural treatment of various anxiety, mood, and personality disorders. He is passionate in helping people to understand and manage common self-defeating emotional problems like anxiety, depression, guilt, shame, and particularly - anger. Alex also thoroughly enjoys mentoring keen trainees of RE&CBT.
