Course Overview

Participants in this workshop will learn about how to work with couples, with an emphasis on over 40 practical and innovative cognitive, emotive, and behavioural interventions. In addition to the interventions, the workshop will address the following: REBT premises about relationships, myths and misconceptions that interfere with effective relationships, irrational beliefs and distorted cognitions that negatively impact couple relationships, and how to develop a relationship vision and change negative relationship patterns. This workshop promises to be very informative and participants will benefit from the numerous strategies they can apply to their own couple relationships as well as their clients’ relationships.

Detailed Information 

  • Participants who have some knowledge of CBT and are in a health, helping or teaching profession. (e.g. Psychologists, Nurses, SW, OT, counselling, Educators, Physicians, Speech therapists) with a particular area of interest working with couples, and marriage and family relationships

  • As stated in the course overview, participants will learn over 40 practical interventions and will address the following: REBT premises about relationships, myths and misconceptions that interfere with effective relationships, irrational beliefs and distorted cognitions that negatively impact couple relationships, and how to develop a relationship vision and change negative relationship patterns.

    • To identify basic RE&CBT principles as they apply to couple relationships

    • To learn how irrational thinking and cognitive distortions negatively impact individuals in relationships.

    • To learn about barriers to effective relationships

    • To identify relationship myths and romance blocks and how they sabotage relationships

    • To learn about numerous cognitive, emotive, and behavioral interventions that have proven to be effective in working with couples

  • One 4-hour session

  • Chapter 1 and Chapter 3 of Cognitive and Rational-Emotive Behavior Therapy with Couples edited by Vernon, Ann (included in the course cost)
